Our Founder

Hi there! I’m Laura Tempesta, a sports bra expert, and the founder of Bravolution.®

Here are a few details about me:

I'm the real deal.

I confess, I have a near maniacal sports bra obsession.  I am the only American with a Master’s degree in Lingerie Design. And I’m the only person in the world who has a M.A. that was specifically designed to study the engineering, design, performance, and innovation of Sports Bras.  In my previous job, I was Nike’s Sports Bra Innovation Director.  Bottom line: I have the chops to give you credible advice about sports bras.

I’m an inventor, a maker, and a baker.

I’m an inventor of 8 patented technologies (some patents pending). I grew up in a home with a wood shop and a sewing room.  From a young age, I frequented both and tinkered.  And I make a mean blueberry pie.

In 5th grade, my gym teacher broke my arm.

It’s a long story, but let’s just say my relationship with P.E. got off to a rocky start. It went downhill from there. My two lowest grades in high school were in the two required P.E. classes.  At least a thousand times I said, “I hate sports.” But then, something happened…

I spent 2 years unable to walk.

When I turned 31, I was diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) after a knee surgery. RSD is chronic pain condition so intense, it’s ranked higher than natural childbirth on the McGill Pain Index. Eventually, my leg became so stiff and painful that I lost my ability to walk. It took years of physical therapy to recover. That experience instilled in me a profound appreciation for the benefit, and gift, of movement. I know what it’s like to want to be active, but have a part of your body prevent it. So, when I met women who wanted to run but couldn’t due to pain from their breasts and/or sports bra, I got fired up--because it’s a solvable problem that isn’t getting enough attention. After experiencing my own fight for my right to pain-free movement, how could I possibly sit by idly and let other women bear the burden of pain and exclusion?

Speaking of walking, my Achilles heel is Girl Scout cookies, specifically Samoas.

I may or may not have eaten an entire box while binge watching New Girl.

I tell it like it is.

Calling out B.S. is part of my D.N.A.  I’m an independent thinker and disrupter.  And, when necessary, I’m not afraid to break the rules.  That type of honesty in thought and action requires courage and isn’t always easy.  But positive change can’t happen without it.

I’m a nerd.

Things I geek out on: Sports Bras (obvi), Statistics (really), Battlestar Galactica (the 2004 series, naturally)

I don’t watch movies on long flights.  I take apart bras and analyze the pieces. (See “nerd” above.)

Thankfully the TSA doesn’t consider a seam ripper a weapon.  Sometimes the people next to me change seats.

I believe kindness is more badass than cruelty.

Life is short.  Don’t be a jerk.

I want to change the world…

…one poorly fitting sports bra at a time. This is my calling, my vocation, and my passion.
